The rapid ascent of DeepSeek can be attributed to its backing by High-Flyer Capital Management, a prominent Chinese quantitative hedge fund blending AI with trading strategies. Co-founded by the AI enthusiast Liang Wenfeng in 2015, the hedge fund evolved into a dedicated lab for AI development in 2023, eventually spinning off as its own entity named DeepSeek.

From the outset, DeepSeek invested heavily in building proprietary data center clusters designed for efficient model training. The company has faced challenges from U.S. export restrictions, limiting access to high-performance AI chips. For instance, they had to rely on Nvidia’s H800 chips, which are less powerful than newer alternatives available to American firms, including the more advanced H100.
