Midjourney has just unveiled its highly anticipated V7 AI image model, marking a significant leap in image generation technology after nearly a year without major updates. The new model rolled out in alpha on Thursday at midnight EST, coinciding with the excitement surrounding OpenAI’s latest image generator that quickly captured attention for its unique Ghibli-style artwork.

V7 is not designed specifically for Ghibli-styled images, but it promises to produce visually striking results that enthusiasts will appreciate. Midjourney’s team has heralded this as their most sophisticated model to date, asserting its superior coherence and aesthetic qualities. CEO David Holz explained that V7 operates on an entirely different architectural foundation, enhancing its responsiveness to text prompts and producing images of significantly higher quality.

The launch comes with a unique personalization feature, where users need to rate about 200 images to configure their individual preferences, a process that is now automatically enabled in V7. This revolutionary twist allows users to tailor their experience from the get-go.

Users can easily toggle the V7 model on or off when using Midjourney’s web platform or its Discord chatbot, allowing flexibility and personalized interaction with the tool. The user interface has been streamlined, making the selection process intuitive and efficient.

According to Holz, V7 not only simplifies image creation but elevates the experience with two operating modes: Turbo and Relax, the former being more resource-intensive yet faster. There’s also Draft Mode, which promises to generate images at an impressive speed while reducing costs—albeit at the expense of quality. This draft-quality imagery can subsequently be enhanced with just a click.

While V7 showcases groundbreaking features, certain functionalities like image upscaling and retexturing are still pending activation, with expectations set for availability in the near future.

“This is a fresh model with unique strengths, and it might require different prompting styles,” Holz noted, inviting users to experiment and discover the new capabilities of V7 themselves.

In initial tests, the model exhibited a promising adherence to user prompts, albeit more comprehensive evaluations are necessary to gauge its full range.

Midjourney, established in 2022 by Holz—who previously co-founded Leap Motion—has drawn significant attention while maintaining financial independence, forgoing external investments. In late 2023, the company anticipated revenue nearing $200 million. Moreover, it is now expanding efforts beyond image generation, establishing a hardware team to explore unannounced projects, indicative of its growth vision.

However, Midjourney faces legal challenges relating to allegations of copyright infringement by training its models on openly sourced images without artist consent. As the AI landscape continues to evolve, the interplay between innovation and ethical considerations remains critical.
