AMD Propels AI Revolution by Acquiring Silicon Photonics Innovator Enosemi

AMD has made a strategic move in the rapidly evolving AI landscape by acquiring Enosemi, a startup focused on creating custom materials for silicon photonics technology. The deal’s financial specifics were not disclosed, but the acquisition promises to significantly enhance AMD’s capabilities in advanced optics for artificial intelligence applications.

Silicon photonics leverages photons for data transmission, providing a faster and more energy-efficient alternative to conventional electronic communication methods. With increasing demands for higher data rates, the interest from technology giants like AMD in this groundbreaking field has surged. Late last year, AMD partnered with several Taiwanese startups to advance research and development in silicon photonics.

AMD’s acquisition of Enosemi is set to accelerate its innovation in co-packaged optics specifically tailored for AI systems. Brian Armick, AMD’s Senior Vice President of Technology and Engineering, remarked in a recent blog post that as artificial intelligence models evolve, the necessity for expedited and efficient data transfers becomes paramount. This acquisition follows on the heels of previous collaborations between AMD and Enosemi, thereby strengthening their partnership in photonics development.

Located in Silicon Valley, Enosemi specializes in photonic integrated circuits (PICs), which are microchips that incorporate multiple photonic components into a single functioning circuit. Founded in 2023 by Ari Novack and Matthew Streshinsky, both seasoned professionals in semiconductor engineering, the company is at the forefront of offering innovative optical interconnects that empower data centers by integrating computing and networking components.

Before its acquisition, Enosemi secured $150,000 in venture capital funding from investors such as the New Mexico Vintage Fund. As of May, the company employed 16 individuals, according to reports from Pitchbook. Notably, Novack is now listed as a silicon design engineering fellow at AMD on his LinkedIn profile.

This new acquisition is AMD’s first significant move following their landmark purchase of ZT Systems, which cost approximately $4.9 billion. Recently, AMD finalized a deal to offload ZT Systems’ server-manufacturing business for $3 billion, indicating a strategic shift in focus. As the company reinforces its investments in artificial intelligence, CEO Lisa Su projected AI chip revenue to hit $5 billion in 2024 during the latest earnings call.

This acquisition marks a pivotal step for AMD as it strives to dominate the AI landscape, aiming to leverage silicon photonics to enhance the performance and efficiency of next-generation AI systems.
