Users of OpenAI’s services faced disruptions on Tuesday morning due to a partial outage that affected platforms like ChatGPT and the API. The company revealed that it began investigating these issues late on Monday night, yet the problems lingered into Tuesday morning. By 5:30 a.m. PT, OpenAI identified the root cause and began implementing fixes. However, a statement released around 8 a.m. PT warned users that a full recovery would take several more hours. Consequently, individuals logging in from the West Coast were left unable to use ChatGPT during peak working hours.

This partial outage stands out from typical disruptions which generally resolve within a few hours; OpenAI acknowledged that users might experience increased errors and latency while attempting to access its services. Reports from users, including TechCrunch, highlighted error messages like “Too many concurrent requests” when they attempted to interact with the chatbot.

The outage coincided with a series of significant announcements from OpenAI, including a major integration with Apple’s services unveiled at WWDC. Notably, the company also disclosed that it hit $10 billion in annualized recurring revenue.

Adding to the mix, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced an 80% price reduction for developers seeking access to new AI reasoning models. This move aims to cater better to the increasing demand as users explore larger-scale applications of AI technology.

Despite previous challenges in managing the vast usage of its AI models, OpenAI appears determined to meet the burgeoning demand as user expectations and needs evolve. Altman has previously noted the tough scalability conundrum, likening the pressure on the company’s servers to “GPUs melting” under the load of high usage scenarios. As demand continues to escalate, the ongoing operational challenges need addressing to avoid future disruptions; however, the ambition to expand capabilities remains central to OpenAI’s growth strategy.
