OpenAI Acquires Tech Podcast TBPN in First Media Deal

OpenAI has acquired TBPN, the Technology Business Programming Network, in its first purchase of a media company. The daily live talk show, hosted by former tech founders John Coogan and Jordi Hays, draws an average of 70,000 viewers per episode across YouTube and X and generated approximately $5 million in advertising revenue in 2025. The deal was announced on April 2, 2026, though financial terms were not disclosed.

TBPN will be housed within OpenAI’s strategy organization and report to Chris Lehane, the company’s chief global affairs officer. The show will maintain editorial independence and continue to select its own guests, according to the announcement.

Why OpenAI Is Buying a Talk Show

The acquisition reflects OpenAI’s ambition to shape the public narrative around artificial intelligence, not just develop the technology. TBPN debuted its livestream format in March 2025 and quickly built a following among founders, investors, and technologists. Its sponsors have included Ramp, Plaid, and Google’s Gemini, and the show has a partnership with the New York Stock Exchange.

With TBPN on track to exceed $30 million in advertising revenue in 2026, the deal also represents a financially meaningful media asset. For OpenAI, which recently secured $122 billion in new funding, the acquisition price is likely modest relative to its broader strategic value in building a platform for technology discourse.

Industry Reaction and Concerns

The deal has prompted debate about the editorial independence of tech media when owned by one of the industry’s most powerful players. Critics argue that even with stated commitments to independence, the incentive structures created by corporate ownership can subtly shape coverage over time. TBPN’s audience, which is heavily composed of founders and venture investors, is precisely the demographic that OpenAI most wants to engage.

Supporters of the acquisition point to TBPN’s existing record of candid commentary and note that the hosts have a strong personal brand that depends on maintaining credibility. OpenAI has emphasized that the show will continue to choose its own topics and guests without interference.

A New Front in the AI Influence Race

The TBPN acquisition follows OpenAI’s broader pattern of investing in influence and access beyond its core products. The company has significantly expanded its policy and communications operations, and the purchase of a popular daily show gives it a direct channel into the conversations that shape how founders, investors, and technologists think about AI’s future.

As AI companies compete not just for technical supremacy but for public trust and narrative control, media ownership is becoming a new dimension of the broader industry competition.
