Describing that same product as entertainment software in the governing legal agreement raises important questions about how organizations should be thinking about AI governance and vendor accountability.

An Industry-Wide Pattern

Microsoft is not alone in this approach. AI companies broadly use terms of service to establish that their outputs carry no warranty of accuracy and that users bear responsibility for how they apply AI-generated information. This is both a reasonable acknowledgment of current model limitations and a way to shift liability risk from the vendor to the user.

What the Copilot situation highlights is that as AI tools become more deeply integrated into professional workflows, the gap between what vendors promise and what they are legally prepared to stand behind is growing more consequential.
